Access Group partners with PainChek to support dementia patients with pain management

The Access Group’s health and social care division has become one of the first care management software providers in the UK to integrate with artificial intelligence (AI)-powered pain assessment tool, PainChek.

PainChek uses AI technology to support pain assessments for those who live with cognitive conditions, such as dementia, and are often unable to clearly verbalise their symptoms.

Access said that by integrating the technology with its specialist health and social care solutions enables care providers to accurately monitor pain.

Using the data, carers can cross-reference with medication records to gain insights into a residents’ care all in one place avoiding duplication that could impact someone’s care.

PainChek is used on mobile phones and tablets, and uses AI and smart automation to analyse facial micro-expressions indicative of pain and detect and score pain in real time.

Alongside facial analysis, the app combines data on observed non-facial indicators of pain imputed using a series of digital checklists by the user, to enable automation calculation of a pain score and the assignment of a pain intensity level. The data integrates with Access Care and Clinical, populating pain charts and automatically updating residents care records.
