Alastair Shanks, managing director, Right at Home GF (Farnham)

Alastair Profile 2020

Alastair Shanks is recognised within the Right at Home network as an innovator and has been instrumental in bringing ideas to the network, including psychometric testing for values in recruitment, a dementia support programme and an innovative response to the changing needs in the local community due to coronavirus.

Alastair uses innovative methods to motivate the team to bring ‘magic moments’ to both clients and caregivers. His ‘Outstanding’ team has launched many local events, including dementia cafes, Love to Move (armchair fitness) sessions, Singing for the Mind and Inclusive Cricket. These events moved online during the pandemic.

Alastair launched a volunteer network in response to the pandemic, recruiting 180 volunteers, shopping for 130 people per week and providing Christmas lunches to 110 people in need across the community.

An advocate of using technology to improve people’s quality of life, he also trialled a new system called Alertacall, giving clients and their families peace of mind that their loved one is okay. Client’s families can access care notes through a family app.

In addition, he has launched Kaido, a wellbeing app, helping caregivers to reduce stress, eat well, and exercise more. The app engaged much of the team and has helped reduce staff stress to build a workforce that is resilient and strong.

Alongside this, Alastair encouraged one of his team members to become a Mental Health First Aider to support the entire care team.
