Care association welcomes PM’s latest COVID measures

Boris Johnson

Tighter government restrictions designed to control the spread of coronavirus have been welcomed by a leading care association.

New measures announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday include people being advised work from home where they can, expansion of face covering rules, closing pubs, restaurants and other hospitality venues by 10pm, halving the number of people allowed to attend weddings and raising fines for first offences to £200.

Erica Lockhart, CEO of the Surrey Care Association, said while the latest COVID measures don’t target care environments specifically, they will “inevitably have an impact”.

She added: “For our sector, in a role that centres on looking after the most vulnerable in society, we welcome any new measures that help to safeguard our residents, our staff and the wider community.

“The threat posed by coronavirus is very real and we’re at the forefront when it comes to counteracting its effects. The latest government warnings and preventative measures serve to emphasise the ongoing risk, thereby reinforcing our position on the front line of the fight. Bringing it back to the forefront of public consciousness can only be a good thing for us then, given the difficulties we’re facing as an industry.

“Where we would welcome more specific support though is in understanding the additional funding recently announced to ensure the continual availability of high quality PPE for use in social care across Surrey and beyond as we face the imminent prospect of a second wave of infections.”

The nation-wide measures were introduced in a bid to stem the rapid spread of coronavirus as the number of positive COVID-19 cases rose by 4,926 on Tuesday with the number of deaths up by 37 to 41,825.

The PM has warned of tougher measures to come if people do not follow the new restrictions announced this week.
