The government has issued new shielding guidance for people who are clinically extremely vulnerable.

The guidance will be relevant from Wednesday (December 2), when the national restrictions end and the tiered system is reinstated.

It offers additional advice to the clinically extremely vulnerable, including those who require additional care and support, over and above the rules for tiers, which apply to everyone.

This includes observing social distancing with anyone outside of their household and support bubble, and continuing to seek support from the NHS.

In the future, the government said it will only reintroduce formal shielding advice in the very worst affected local areas and for a limited period of time.

This will only apply to some, but not all, Tier 3 areas and will be based on advice from the Chief Medical Officer.

The government will write to individuals separately to inform them if they are advised to shield.
