From independent providers to large corporates, this award recognises the organisations that have led the pack in providing outstanding care over the past 12 months.
The category highlights those providers that have worked hard to grow and retain their workforce, provide outstanding training and, most importantly, deliver quality, person-centred care.

Bluebird Care offers a comprehensive approach to care. As a care provider, it understands the importance of catering for a diverse range of needs and being flexible enough to offer personalised services. It puts quality at the heart of its business, which is why 24 of businesses were rated ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC in 2019 alone. Over the last 12 months, the provider has launched a number of initiatives, including a Health and Wellbeing Checks Service, across its network of offices. This comprises of a 30-minute appointment from specially trained ‘Care Champions’, who pay weekly visits to clients check on their vital signs. It has also relaunched its Live-in Care service, which allows customers to have round the clock care in the safety of their own homes. Bluebird Care is committed to consistent and qualitative caregiving that responds directly to the needs of its customers. As such, it regularly updates the services they offer and ensure a wide range of specialist services are available.
Heritage Healthcare is an established home care franchise. Together, the directors of the brand have over 85 years of experience from within the care industry. CEO Glenn Pickersgill spent much of his childhood helping out at his family’s care home, a business he went on to own and expand until its sale in 2006. Two years later, he purchased a home care business alongside wife and fellow director, Sally Pickersgill. The pair launched into the franchise sector in 2013 and now operate 20 offices around the UK. The network has achieved ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ ratings from CQC, seven of which were welcomed this year. Over the last 12 months, the network has gone from strength to strength. Its office in Cardiff, for example, achieve 100% compliance from Care Inspectorate Wales, which paved the way for franchisee Jameela Kotawala to launch the service into Swansea. The provider was also named the Best National Support Team and Most Outstanding Home Care Team at the recent Home Care Awards.
Home Instead Senior Care
Home Instead Senior Care is the UK’s largest provider of companionship-based care for older people in their own homes. The HISC model of delivering care recognises the need to support people’s emotional needs and offer social stimulation. This was recognised in 2016 when the company was awarded a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. Its service is delivered through a network of franchise offices (currently 200) and over the past 12 months, it has seen demand for its service grow. The provider currently holds 53 ‘Outstanding’ ratings from the CQC, more than any other care provider in England. HISC been also named as one of The Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies to Work For, for a second consecutive year. In terms of training, its End of Life training programme received the Princess Royal Training Award in 2019. HISC also embraces technology and this year has launched GrandPad, a simple tablet for seniors. This allows seniors to send voice emails, view pictures and videos, listen to music, play games and make video calls.
Right at Home UK
Right at Home UK prides itself on providing ‘life changing’ care to people in their own homes, going above and beyond to improve its client’s lives. One example of this was demonstrated at its Nottingham office, which arranged for its supercar enthusiast client to go to the AX Supercars HQ for a VIP tour. Over the last 12 months, the provider has achieved external recognition in both home care and franchise sectors, having been shortlisted for more than 20 awards, eight of which it has won. Additionally, it has been awarded a 5-star employer status for a sixth consecutive year, reflecting the support it provides to its network. The provider was given the title following its annual employee engagement survey. Also in 2019, 40% of Right at Home’s CQC inspections have resulted in ‘Outstanding’ ratings, compared with one Outstanding rating last year. Embracing technology has played a considerable part in this achievement. In 2018, the company launched ‘project paperless’ and adopted ‘Mobizio’ to allow real-time monitoring of critical activities, such as medical management.
The Good Care Group
The Good Care Group was established nearly a decade ago and specialises in 24/7 live-in care. Over the last 12 months, MD Dominique Kent and her all-female team have masterminded a number of successes. In April, TGCG became the only live-in care provider in England to be ranked ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC in all five domains inspected, the highest score possible. The company has also grown its workforce by 10% over the last six months and has doubled the size of its London headquarters as a result. Speaking of recruitment, TGCG has overhauled its candidate screening process with the launch of a ‘situational judgement test’. Developed in-house, the test identifies behavioural and values attributes and predicts those who would make exceptional live-in carers. TGCG has also scooped eight prestigious awards in the last year, including Glassdoor (for which employees rate their company anonymously) where it’s ranked fourth out of 700,000 companies.
